Angkor Wat in 1995
This time, please let me talk about my experiences from a long time ago. I traveled to Isan for about one month from late February in 1993. The purpose of my travel that time was to see Phanom Rung in Buriram. But at that time, I made a mistake choosing the way to get there (I wrote about that here). It was such a hard way for me, so that I didn’t have very much fun. But anyway, I had reached my goal, so I continued my travel aimlessly to go further east in Isan. Then, when I was on my way to Surin, I met an old woman who was an elementary teacher. I told her that I had started having an interest in the Khmer style remains in Isan, and she said that I should go to Khao Phra Wihaan. And she added that those were the biggest and most beautiful ruins in Isan. I didn’t have any information about those ruins, but I was really interested in them after I heard her story. So I decided to go there.
I’m going to talk about the details of traveling to Khao Phra Wihaan some other time, but I eventually went there, and I saw the fantastic ruins which were Khmer-style, and I also saw the land of Cambodia from the edge of a precipice. they were breathtaking way more than I expected. After that, I longed to go Cambodia for a few years.
Then, in July 1995, I finally got an opportunity to go to Cambodia. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very good, so I couldn’t take a picture of the sunrise at Angkor Wat, but there weren’t very many people. Actually I saw only four people there in the morning. It seemed like I had Angkor Wat almost all to myself. That was my own experience 20 years ago, but I remember that as clearly as if it had just happened yesterday. I had a really good time. It was a bit scary, though.
However, I wanted to take a picture of the sunrise at Angkor Wat very much, so I went again in December 2009. But I was really disappointed. Even though it was in the dark early morning, a big crowd had started gathering at Angkor Wat already. I don’t know if you can imagine how crowded it was. It was enough to surprise me. Actually, I didn’t even think about that because there were only four people before. On top of that, it was during refurbishment, so it was covered with green sheets. My expectation had been ruined by them.
But I think that was my own fault because it was an obvious thing that there would be a lot of travelers in late December. I should have expected that before. So now, I wanted to go Cambodia again. Next time, I want to go in the rainy season. If I go there in that season, I probably can’t take a picture of the sunrise, but I don’t care about that because many people are taking that pictures. I think I can’t get an impressive picture as I’m taking a picture that is already taken by many people. Especially for an amateur like me. But I can’t go there this year. But maybe, next year!
Those are pictures that I took in 1995. But unfortunately, the resolution is very low because I had scanned those ones about 10 years ago. Especially Part.02 and Part.08 to 13 are really bad because I had edited those ones for 480 x 320 pixels already. So the sharpness of those images are badly high, but I couldn’t improve them any more. Actually, I wanted to scan them again, but my film scanner doesn’t work on Windows7. So I’m a little embarrassed to show them. Still, I think those are better than pictures I took in 2009. I want to get a better images next time.
