Train travel to Chiang Mai – I like it!
Chiang Mai is the leading tourist site in Thailand, and a large number of tourists visit there from not only around the country, but also from overseas.
My impression of this city is that it is not too large and not too small, so we can enjoy the atmosphere of local Thailand with the comforts of a city. On top of that, it has a lot of interesting sightseeing area. (but of course they don’t have any beaches)
Also Chiang Mai is famous as area with beautiful women. (but I’m afraid I don’t agree)
I think those are the reasons for Chiang Mai’s popularity.
By the way, when I go to Chiang Mai I prefer to take the train if I have time. It takes about 12 hours from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
My recommendation is to take a sleeping car that leaves at dusk from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok. When I did this, I felt like I was a cool traveler. In real life, I’m a just middle aged man though.
Also I want to recommend just one more thing.
If you are man and get a bottom bunk in the sleeping car, and you see a woman sleeping on top bunk, you should offer to switch beds with her. That is the polite thing to do in Thailand on the sleeping car.
I always do that so I’m always sleeping on the top bunk.
