The Jim Thompson House – I didn’t know anything!
Jim Thompson was an American who was known for bringing Thai silk to the world, and his name became a top brand of Thai silk goods.
I think anybody who likes Thailand knows this. I use to be a backpacker when I was in my twenties, and I didn’t care about expensive things, but even I knew his name and his Thai silk brand. I also knew that the house where Jim Thompson lived was turned into museum and located at Siam Square in Bangkok. I thought that the house was just an incredible rich man’s house and wasn’t worth visiting.
That’s why I never thought of going there until this May, when I had a free day in Bangkok and was very, very bored, I decided to visit the Jim Thompson House because it was located near my hotel. I could get there in about 30 minutes by BTS.
Basically, I went there to kill time. but…
The Jim Thompson House & Museum was 10 times as interesting as I thought. There were some beautiful old statues of Buddha, and I thought that they were imitations. But a guide who was there explained to me that everything in the house was real. I was really surprised because I didn’t think such wonderful antique art could be owned by person.
The atmosphere of the house was really nice too! Siam Square is one of the most bustling areas in Bangkok, but the Jim Thompson House is surrounded by beautiful trees, plants, flowers and was really quiet.
All in all, The Jim Thompson House is really nice. The entrance fee is not bad either. It costs only 100 bahts. I think it is worth going to. Before I went there, I thought I knew a lot about the place, but actually I didn’t know anything. I knew it from my first trip to Thailand that was about 28 years ago. I regret that I didn’t visit to there until my last trip.
As for Jim Thompson himself, I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about him. If you want to know more, you should visit their Official website. I just respect him as an architect, a businessman, a designer, a great art collector. He went missing at the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia in 1967 and was never seen again.
All of these are pictures of outside of the house. It’s prohibited to take photos inside of it.
