The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho
There are lots of Reclining Buddhas in Thailand, but the one at Wat Pho is the most famous out of all of them. When I first visited Bangkok, I was not interested in any temples at all. Actually, I didn’t know anything about Thailand at that time. For example, I asked a traveler where he was going, and he said that he was going to go to Chiang Mai. When I heard that, I thought where is Chiang Mai? Wait… Oh, no! I remember. Although I wrote here that my current English teacher thinks Chiang Mai is a country near China (here), I thought that as well! Anyway, even person like me knew the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho. That is therefore such a famous Buddha statue.
What makes the Reclining Buddha famous is its size. It is significantly big. It’s 46m long and 15m high. On top of that, the whole body is covered with gold leaf. Besides, it is also famous for its flat foot. That is big too. It is 4.5m long and 3m high, and it regarded as a sign of saint because the Buddha had a flat foot. It is considered one of thirty two special features of the Buddha’s body. It is not only flat and big. It also has 108 beautiful art panels related to Buddhism teaching. That panels are made with rainbow colored shells.
The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is really famous as I mentioned above, so there are always a large number of visitors around it, and everybody is taking pictures. I understand that they want to take pictures of this famous Reclining Buddha. I want to do that too, but it was hard to do so in a big crowd. So now, when I want to take pictures of it, I go there in the evening. At that time, it’s around 5:00 p.m, there are fewer people than the day time. But I’m not sure what time they close. If you go there in the evening, you might want to make sure to check of their operating time first (Please refer to the link).
