Wat Chedi Luang – It had totally changed!
As I wrote in the old post, Chiang Mai is the leading tourist site in Thailand. Therefore there are a large number of tourists who visit there. I liked to go there as well as other tourists, only at first, though. From my fourth or fifth visit to Thailand, I had prefered Southern Thailand to Northern Thailand, so I hadn’t been to Chiang Mai for a while.
Still, I had retained clear memories of Wat Chedi Luang. When I saw that site for the first time, it looked like it was about to collapse, and I was really impressed how big and old it was. So I wanted to see that site again. Once I stopped by there for only a little bit, however that was during its refurbishment. A few years later again, I had an opportunity to go to Chiang Mai, and I went to see Wat Chedi Luang. I was really interested in how it was built.
However, I couldn’t believe that was the same place. It had totally changed! I thought it hadn’t been refurbished, but had been rebuilt! The atmosphere of the ancient holy place was completely gone. I felt a little bit angry rather than disappointed of that sight!
Well, I should calm down (LOL). It’s probably hard for any real thing to beat the beauty of the place that’s in my memory. Anyway, it has some good points too. It was lit up at night. If you go there, you might want to go at dusk. At that time, we can see a big stupa which is changed to gold by being lit up in the dark blue sky. It’s a very beautiful sight.
